Product Description

Many of the seeds that captive finches eat are either low in protein or deficient in one or more of the essential amino acids. In the wild, finches compensate for low or poor quality protein intake by supplementing their diet with insects. Aviculturists often feed mealworms, fly pupae and termites to their finches during the breeding season. These insects are not always available nor are they necessarily the best form of nutrition for many finches, as they have a fairly high fat content.  This product provides a concentrated and digestible form of protein for pre-breeding and breeding finches.  This can be used as a supplement with insects or as a complete substitute for insects.

About Finch Diets
Finches are mainly granivorous birds and in the wild spend much of their time foraging for seed. Native grasses, shrubs and trees provide a diversity of nutrient compositions not available in the cereal grains that aviculturists feed to their finches. Many of the seeds that captive finches eat are either low in protein or deficient in one or more of the essential amino acids. In the wild, finches compensate for low or poor quality protein intake by supplementing their diet with insects. Aviculturists often feed mealworms, fly pupae or termites to their finches during the breeding season. These insects are not always available and, because they have a fairly high fat content, are not necessarily the best source of animal protein for many finches.

Using Finch Soft Food
Passwell Finch Soft Food is a granular powder and should be stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place. To prepare a moist, crumbly soft food, slowly add warm water to the powder while mixing. Prepare food fresh for each day. We do not advise storing prepared food in the fridge overnight as it can become contaminated with micro-organisms. Fresh is best. Feed prepared food as a supplement with insects or as a complete substitute for insects, to Australian finches, foreign finches, weavers and whydahs. Introduce prepared mix in small quantities until it is accepted. Fussy birds can be enticed by mixing a few small meal worms, fly pupae, termites or other treat in the food.

Non-breeding birds
Small finches and waxbills 1 heaped teaspoon of prepared food per five birds daily.
Large finches, weavers and whydahs 1 heaped teaspoon of prepared food per pair of birds daily.
